AS MY DAUGHTERS hurled stranded starfish into the sea at Cape Cod last week in a feverish attempt to rescue them, it brought to mind the story that comes up often when we talk about helping the homeless, or any growing population of needy persons. For those unfamiliar with the Starfish Story, allow me to summarize the essay by Loren Eiseley: After a storm an old man sees a little boy walking along a beach that is covered with starfish. The boy stoops regularly to throw them back into the ocean. The man gently tells the boy he really can't make a difference because there are hundreds of stranded starfish and miles of beach. The boy stops for a moment, disconcerted, and then picks up another starfish and hurls it back into the ocean saying, "Well, I just made a big difference to that one."
